Final Score: Miami 22 – Buffalo 9
Location: Miami Gardens, FL – Sun Life Stadium
W-L records: Buffalo (5-5); Miami (6-4)
In a Nutshell:
In an AFC East matchup that was expected to be a defensive struggle, Buffalo nursed a six-point lead into the third quarter (9-3) thanks to three field goals from
Dan Carpenter. Miami however, put together a touchdown drive to take a one-point lead (10-9), and the Dolphins defense shut the door from that point forward. Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins’ offense awoke to score 17 unanswered points to end the game with the defense contributing a safety in a pivotal 22-9 victory.
An intentional grounding penalty on Kyle Orton resulted in a safety for Miami to push the Dolphins’ lead to three (12-9) late in the third quarter. The Bills offense couldn’t muster much of anything in the second half as they went 0-7 on third down conversions over the final two quarters and 0-2 in the red zone for the game.
The loss dropped the Bills to 5-5 on the season, 2-2 in the division and 2-5 versus AFC opponents as they slipped perilously behind in the AFC playoff race. Miami moved into sole possession of second place in the division with the victory improving to 6-4.
How it went down:
--The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first going on a 14-play 68-yard march before Caleb Sturgis put a 38-yard field goal through the uprights for a 3-0 lead with 6:40 left in the opening quarter.
--Buffalo also scored on their first possession with a 14-play 67-yard drive, which resulted in a 33-yard field goal from Dan Carpenter to tie the score at 3-3 with :18 seconds left in the first quarter.
--
Jerry Hughes forced a Ryan Tannehill fumble on a scramble run and Duke Williams recovered the loose ball and returned it to the Bills’ 12-yard line. Buffalo’s offense then went on their longest drive of the season taking 9:24 off the clock before Carpenter hit a 21-yard field goal for a 6-3 lead with 3:26 remaining in the first half.

Bills recover Tannehill fumble
--Buffalo tacked on another field goal at the end of an eight-play 49-yard drive with Carpenter hitting from 46 yards out for a 9-3 lead in the third quarter.
--The Dolphins were able to retake the lead for the first time since the opening quarter when Tannnehill hit a wide open Brandon Gibson for a seven-yard touchdown strike to cap a nine-play 80-yard drive (10-9) with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

--After a late intentional grounding call long after the play was over resulted in a safety for Miami, Buffalo kicked away. On the Jarvis Landry return
Nigel Bradham forced a fumble that was recovered by Nickell Robey at the Dolphins’ 39-yard line.
--Unfortunately Buffalo’s offense could manage just 10 yards on the drive and Dan Carpenter missed wide left on the 47-yard field goal attempt.
--Miami was then the beneficiary of a 24-yard pass interference call on the next possession that set the Dolphins up at the Bills’ 13-yard line. Two plays later Tannehill found Jarvis Landry for an eight-yard touchdown play to balloon the Miami lead to 19-9 early in the fourth quarter.
--After Buffalo failed on a fourth down conversion deep in their own territory Miami kicked a short field goal to cap the scoring (22-9).
Stat lines:
--Kyle Orton was 22-39 passing for 193 yards and a passer rating of 69.7.
--Chris Hogan led Buffalo’s receivers with seven catches for 74 yards.
--RBs Bryce Brown and Boobie Dixon combined for 49 rushing yards on 16 carries for a 3.0 yards per carry average.
--After going 6-8 on third down conversions in the first half, Buffalo’s offense went 0-7 in the second half.
Quotes from the locker room:
“To get just three points off the two turnovers you can’t do that especially when the ball started in their plus 50 range and you can’t do that. You’ve got to be able to take advantage of those situations and finish and we were outscored. But it was a team loss. There’s no doubt about that when you look at all the things that happened out there.”
--Head coach Doug Marrone
“Our performance isn’t good enough right now. We’ve got to go back to the drawing board a little bit and just the only thing I know is to go back and work harder and try to work harder and try to get better and it starts with the quarterback. My job is to put points on the board and whatever I need to do to get the offense better that’s what I need to do.”
--QB Kyle Orton
“That’s pretty much what it was missed tackles. We had a couple of miscommunications and that was it. We’ve just got to make the plays when we’ve got the opportunity. We were in position. We’ve just got to finish.”
--LB Nigel Bradham

TORONTO -- Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will be re-evaluated Friday after he injured his left hamstring late in Thursday night's 100-93 win over the Toronto Raptors.
Rose did not return to the game but did not seem too concerned about the injury.
"I guess it's cramps in my hamstrings," Rose said. "But I think it's minor, and they decided to pull me out."
Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said after the game that Rose told him he was fine and that he thought he had just tweaked the hamstring.
Thibodeau thought an MRI on the hamstring was likely for Friday, but Rose was hopeful he wouldn't have to have one. He said he would receive ice and muscle stimulation treatments, and left open the possibility he might be able to practice Friday.
"I don't think it's that serious," Rose said. "Just ice it, stim, see if I can practice [Friday] and give it a go Saturday."
The injury occurred with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Rose turned over the ball and fell to the floor before walking gingerly back to the bench. He isn't quite sure how it happened.
"I don't know, man," Rose said. "Just missing two years, now you're just going to fall for no reason I guess, man. Just trying to work every day, put in consistent work every day. And don't lose any confidence with these setbacks."
Rose already has missed four games this season because of sprained ankles. In 30 minutes of action Thursday night, Rose scored 20 points, going 5-for-14 from the floor. He had four assists, three rebounds and five turnovers on the night.
Rose's teammate Joakim Noah delivered an impassioned defense of the point guard after the game and said he was upset with the way the media portrayed Rose's statements earlier this week when the former MVP admitted he was thinking about the future as it pertained to if and when he played in certain games this season.
"We're a group that's gone through a lot," Noah said. "Just looking at [the situation] as a teammate is just frustrating because I feel like sometimes he's portrayed as something that he's not. You don't come back from the injuries that he's coming back from without an unbelievable commitment ... just watching the league and the power that [the media] have. Sometimes you guys can really portray somebody as something he's not, and to me that's a little disappointing just because I know how much he cares about this game.
"I see it every day. I think we're all in this together. This is not a one-man team. But at the end of the day, we need him; we need him, and I don't want to see him down. I know sometimes it's frustrating, you've got injuries, you've got tweaks. Every time something happens to him, people act like it's the end of the world, and that's f---ing so lame to me. Relax. He's coming back from two crazy surgeries, obviously we're being conservative with him, and when things aren't going right, he's got to listen to his body more than anybody. So everybody needs to chill the f--- out. I'm sorry for cursing but I'm really passionate. I don't like to see him down and he doesn't say that he's down, but I just don't like it when people portray him and judge him because it's not fair to him. It's not.
"We're going to be just fine. We're going to be just fine. We just got to take it -- everybody just needs to chill out. Chill out."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas died Saturday night after a car accident near his home, according to police.
Metro Nashville Police said Bironas, 36, lost control on a curve in his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed after 11 p.m. less than a mile from home. Police said in a statement on the department website that his SUV was speeding when it went off the road and hit a line of trees before coming to a stop upside down in a culvert.
Bironas was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene.

The Titans released Bironas in March after nine seasons. The Tennessean reported Bironas had worked out earlier this week for the Detroit Lions and for Tampa Bay during the offseason.
Bironas married Rachel Bradshaw, daughter of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, in June. Police spokesman Don Aaron said a police chaplain was with her after the crash.
The Titans, who play at Cincinnati, issued a statement Sunday saying their thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family.
"We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news from last night about Rob Bironas," the team said in a statement. "Rob made a significant impact as a player in his nine years with the team and more importantly touched many lives in the Nashville community off the field."
Bironas was the fourth most-accurate kicker in NFL history, connecting on 85.7 percent of his kicks (239 of 279). Only David Akers made more field goals (247) between 2005 and 2013 than Bironas. For kickers with 100 or more field goals since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, Bironas ranked third making 75.2 percent of his kicks from 40 yards or longer (94 of 125).
He finished as the Titans' second all-time leading scorer with 1,032 points, and he set a franchise record scoring triple digits in seven straight seasons. He also set an NFL record in 2011 in hitting a field goal from at least 40 yards in 10 consecutive games.
Bironas made a franchise-record 11 game-winning field goals during his career, including a 60-yarder against the Indianapolis Colts in 2006 that remains the longest field goal in Oilers or Titans history. Bironas kicked an NFL single-game record eight field goals in a 2007 victory over the Houston Texans, including a 29-yard game-winner as time expired. That helped him to make his only Pro Bowl, the same year he was an Associated Press All Pro.
He went to Auburn and transferred to Georgia Southern where he won a Division I-AA national title. Bironas went to work for his father's company in Louisville, Kentucky, and was cut by Green Bay in 2002. He played in the Arena Football League and even the AF2 while spending time in training camps with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh working as a part-time security guard and other jobs while trying to stick with an NFL team.
He won a roster spot with the Titans in 2005.
"To play in the NFL was the ultimate goal," Bironas said in December 2006.

Tim Tebow and Jameis Winston are the state of Florida’s two latest Heisman winners. That’s about all the two have in common.
On Saturday, the former Florida quarterback and current SEC Network analyst had some words of wisdom for Winston, Florida State’s embattled signal caller who just served a one-game suspension for shouting an obscene and derogatory phrase about women on the FSU campus. (The Seminoles hung on to beat Clemson in OT, with Winston on the sidelines).
Speaking on ESPN’s SportsCenter Saturday, Tebow said it’s his “hope and prayer” for Winston to find “wise counsel” and use better judgement.
“He has something that’s more important to live for than just the moment,” Tebow said. “Because when you live for the moment, the moment will always let you down in silly situations like he’s been in the past.
“I have two sisters and a mom, and what was said just isn’t OK. My hope and prayer for Jameis is that he can find people that will invest in him and invest in his life.
Tebow, who has lived under a bright spotlight, said Winston has an opportunity to inspire in a positive way.
“I hope he can see that and understand that these kids are going to watch him and they’re going to follow him and it’s his responsibility to lead them in a good direction,” Tebow said.
“And this kid has so many attributes that could be used for positive things. … Whether … he leads people in a good direction or a bad direction, he’s a big-time leader. His attributes of infectious personality, you know people rally around him. That could be used for good things or bad things.”

Adrian Peterson's attorney says the RB 'deeply regrets the unintentional injury' to his son. (USATSI)
Hours after news surfaced Friday that Adrian Peterson had been indicted in Texas for "reckless or negligent injury to a child," the Vikings chose to deactivate their best player for Sunday's matchup against the Patriots.

According to the StarTribune.com, an arrest warrant has been issued for Peterson.
Details of what happened, via Minneapolis' WCCO:
Sports Radio 610 in Houston obtained a draft of the police report which says Peterson admitted that he did, in his words, "whoop" one of his children last May while the boy was visiting him in Houston.
When the 4-year-old boy returned to Minnesota, his mother took him to a doctor. The police report said the boy told the doctor Peterson had hit him with a branch from a tree.
The doctor told investigators that the boy had a number of lacerations on his thighs, along with bruise-like marks on his lower back and buttocks and cuts on his hand. The police report says the doctor described some of the marks as open wounds and termed it "child abuse." Another examiner agreed, calling the cuts "extensive."
More from Sports Radio 610: "Peterson's son had pushed another one of Peterson's children off of a motorbike video game. As punishment, Peterson grabbed a tree branch -- which he consistently referred to as a 'switch' -- removed the leaves and struck the child repeatedly."
Earlier in the day the Vikings released this statement: "The Vikings are in the process of gathering information regarding the legal situation involving Adrian Peterson. At this time, we will defer further questions to Adrian's attorney Rusty Hardin."
A short time later -- but before Peterson was deactivated -- Hardin released a statement: “Adrian Peterson has been informed that he was indicted by a grand jury in Montgomery County, Texas for Injury to a Child. The charged conduct involves using a switch to spank his son. This indictment follows Adrian's full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son. He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened. He has cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours. Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning. It is important to remember that Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury.”
Hardin, who is vacationing in Europe, told the StarTribune: “[Peterson] will be surrendering as soon as he can when it works out with the authorities, but we don't have a time right now.”
The news comes at the end of a tumultuous week for the NFL, which has been heavily criticized for how it handled the case of former Ravens running back Ray Rice. On Monday, TMZ released surveillance video showing Rice punching his then-fiancee in the face and knocking her unconscious in an Atlantic City hotel elevator last February.
On Thursday, Peterson was asked about Rice.

One week after dirt track racer Kevin Ward Jr. was killed when he was struck by a car driven by Tony Stewart, Stewart’s camp says the NASCAR star is grieving and trying to deal with the tragedy.
“It’s been an emotional week for him,’’ Brett Frood, executive vice president at Stewart-Haas Racing, said during a news conference Friday at Michigan International Speedway, where it was announced veteran Jeff Burton would drive for Stewart in Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400.
“He’s grieving,” Frood said of Stewart, whose role in the fatality led NASCAR to announce Friday a new rule barring its drivers from approaching the track or moving cars after an incident during a race. Stewart could face criminal charges, although no charges are currently pending.
"He's grieving."- Brett Frood, executive vice president at Stewart-Haas Racing
The new rule takes effect immediately and applies to all NASCAR series.
"Through time you have to recognize when you get a reminder or tap on the shoulder, something that may need to be addressed," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition and racing development. "This is one of those times where we look outside our sport and we look at other things, and we feel like it was time to address this."
IndyCar reviewed its safety guidelines after Ward's death, and the protocol is similar to what NASCAR announced Friday, IndyCar spokesman Mike Kitchel said. Drivers are supposed to stay put until a safety team arrives unless there is a fire or other extenuating circumstances.
It remains to be seen how NASCAR will enforce its provision, and how much the threat of penalties will deter drivers in the heat of the moment.
Last Saturday, Stewart's car struck Ward, 20, during a sprint car race in Canandaigua, N.Y. After Stewart's car appeared to clip Ward's car, sending it spinning, Ward left the car during the caution period, walked down the track and was hit by Stewart. His funeral was Thursday.
NASCAR has thrived for years, fueled in part by the larger-than-life personalities of some of its biggest stars. Six-time champion Jimmie Johnson recalls a moment early in his career, long before he became one of NASCAR’s most-respected drivers.

"I guess the one experience that comes to mind for me in Cup was maybe my rookie year at Bristol," he said. "Robby Gordon wrecked me on a re-start, and I got out and shot him the bird."
Johnson said he supports NASCAR's rule addition. The father of two also has a slightly different perspective now on his "salute" to Gordon all those years ago.
"I'm sure I picked up a few fans and lost a few fans," he said. "Now, as a parent, if my child's hero was out there shooting the bird to another ballplayer, baseball player or football player or whatever it was, I'd probably try to steer my kids away from that. So, it depends. I don't think that entertainment value should come with any safety implications. Safety is the No. 1 priority for drivers, crew members, and the officials that are out there on the race track. And if it turns a few fans off, then in my opinion, they're a fan for the wrong reason."

He went to Old Trafford to show off his Claret Jug, but Northern Ireland's world champion golfer Rory McIlroy scored an own goal with his choice of suit.
The 25-year-old set Twitter alight for all the wrong reasons at the weekend - his fans took their eyes off the ball and focused on his three-piece.
And some of them said Rory had landed himself deep in the fashion bunker.
There were no end of suggestions about who else walked out in similar checks.
"Rupert the Bear?" one tweeter suggested. "Mr Toad?" said another. "Noddy Holder?" suggested a third.
"That suit was last seen on John Wayne in The Quiet Man," somebody else joked.

“Start Quote

It is a big departure for him. But he looks like somebody who should be strutting around in an expensive suit and why not?”
Paul Stafford
People on the streets of Belfast told BBC NI's Good Morning Ulster that they were not sure.
"He looks like an optical illusion," said one.
"He must have had one or two clarets if he wears that," said another.
But Belfast hair stylist Paul Stafford admired Rory's courage.
"It looks like a Tom Ford suit. I thought Rory was very brave. It is very hard to pull off a suit like that. Weirdly, I think it did work for him," he said.
"He has changed his image. He is an A-lister and he probably has advisers. He has got the physique. It is a big departure for him. But he looks like somebody who should be strutting around in an expensive suit and why not?"
Belfast gentleman's tailor Chris Suitor said the suit was well made.
"Construction wise it seems very well put together. It has jetted pockets, working cuffs and it is a very fine fabric," he said.
"It wouldn't be what I would have worn, but maybe Rory is going to become a style icon.
Ian Poulter Double take: Ian Poulter wears a markedly similar suit at Wimbledon in June
"He has just won a couple of majors, he has so many millions in the bank, and he is just going to go for it."
Mr Suitor said Rory could have spent £3,000 or £4,000 on the suit.
"It is a mixture of a glen check and a tartan. For Rory to choose something like that, he obviously knew this was going to create some sort of reaction."
And he said he hoped the reaction would be in evidence at his own shop door in Belfast on Monday morning.
"I hope when I open at 09:30 BST this morning, I have a queue right out the door of men looking for Rory McIlroy suits," he joked.
Fellow golfer Ian Poulter just wanted his suit back. He was pictured wearing an almost identical model at Wimbledon in June.
When he saw Rory on the pitch at Old Trafford on Saturday, he tweeted: "Hey you can keep your Claret Jug but can I have my suit back please."
McIlroy tweeted back: "Sorry, you must be mistaken... this suit was only available with the Claret Jug."

Gylfi Sigurdsson's smart finish saw Swansea City claim a surprise 2-1 win at Manchester United as the Louis van Gaal era started in defeat.
Sigurdsson bagged the winner 18 minutes from time on Saturday as Van Gaal - tasked with improving the fortunes at Old Trafford after David Moyes' disastrous spell in charge last term - endured a day he will want to forget in his opening Premier League fixture.
The Dutchman's 3-4-1-2 system did not appear to suit United despite being used in pre-season and they found themselves behind when Ki Sung-Yueng scored from 20 yards just before the half-hour mark.
Van Gaal, known for his tinkering, swapped to 4-4-1-1 in the second half and it appeared to be the tonic for United's response, led by new captain Wayne Rooney, who levelled with a clever overhead kick eight minutes after the break.
Rooney saw an outstanding free-kick crash against the post with 24 minutes left and Old Trafford was then stunned when Sigurdsson - Swansea's main signing of the close-season - finished well after Wayne Routledge's cut-back.
The result is sure to put early pressure on Van Gaal and is likely to see further spending from United in the transfer window, as they look to recover from last term's seventh-place finish.
The victory was Swansea's second at Old Trafford in 2014 - and second ever - as the Welsh club also won a third-round FA Cup tie by the same scoreline in January.
Van Gaal gave 20-year-old defender Tyler Blackett a Premier League debut, while Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard also made their top-flight bows.
Lingard started in the unfamiliar position of right wing-back and was nearly caught out just six minutes in, when Routledge drifted across him untracked, but the Swansea man's first touch meant that Jonjo Shelvey's ball in behind was squandered.
Sigurdsson - back at Swansea for a second spell, this time permanently, after signing from Tottenham - saw his 25-yard shot in the 12th minute fall awkwardly for United goalkeeper David de Gea, but the Spaniard did well to smother it.
Lingard was then injured in a challenge with Ashley Williams, and replaced by Adnan Januzaj, before the hosts eventually got going, with Lukasz Fabianski - the only debutant for the visitors from the start - needing to be alert to keep out Phil Jones' deflected cross and Juan Mata's inswinging effort.
Swansea were able to convert one of their chances, though, as Ki delighted the travelling fans in the 28th minute.
The South Korea international was played in by Sigurdsson, who initially linked with Nathan Dyer, and he hit a sweet left-footed effort that curled into the right corner from 20 yards.
Van Gaal's men failed to mount a significant response before the break and as a result, he replaced the ineffective Javier Hernandez with Nani and changed systems.
Rooney then produced the equaliser eight minutes into the second half, showing great anticipation to thrash Jones' near-post flick-on home from four yards in sensational style.
The England star continued to threaten, with Williams required to deny him with a last-gasp tackle, before he was then thwarted by the woodwork as his wicked 25-yard set-piece left Fabianski rooted to the spot, but crashed back off the post.
And Swansea made the hosts pay for their profligacy as a quick free-kick, taken by Wilfried Bony, set them free.
A cross from substitute Jefferson Montero made its way through to Routledge at the far post, and although he slipped, his ball fortunately fell for Sigurdsson, who hammered an effort through a sea of bodies that was too hot to handle for De Gea.
United, so often saved by late goals, rarely looked like levelling, but were denied a penalty despite Januzaj's cross striking the arm of Angel Rangel in injury time, as Swansea claimed an excellent win against the odds.
